The Great Wall is a 2016 American-Chinese fantasy action film directed by Zhang Yimou. Matt Damon stars as William Garin, a European mercenary in medieval China who arrives at the Great Wall searching for gunpowder and discovers the wall's true purpose: defending against the Tao Tei, enormous reptilian monsters that attack China every 60 years. Garin joins the Nameless Order, an elite military force led by Commander Lin Mae, played by Jing Tian, in defending the wall against the creatures' massive assault.
The Great Wall was the most expensive Chinese-American co-production at the time, budgeted at $150 million, and represented China's most ambitious attempt to create a globally commercial blockbuster. Zhang Yimou, one of China's most celebrated filmmakers, brought his signature visual flair to the battle sequences, using color-coded armies in elaborately choreographed formations. The film earned $335 million worldwide but was considered a commercial disappointment given its massive budget.
