The Judge is a 2014 American legal drama directed by David Dobkin. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Hank Palmer, a slick, morally flexible Chicago defense attorney who returns to his small Indiana hometown when his mother dies and discovers that his estranged father, Judge Joseph Palmer played by Robert Duvall, is suspected of killing a man with his car — a former defendant the Judge had sentenced years earlier. As Hank reluctantly defends his father, the trial forces both men to confront the resentments, unspoken truths, and suppressed love that have defined their fractured relationship.
Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall's scenes together crackled with the intensity of two extraordinary actors feeding off each other — their confrontations shifted from hostile to vulnerable to devastating within single scenes. Robert Duvall earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The Judge earned $84 million worldwide on a $50 million budget.
