The Lost World: Jurassic Park is a 1997 American science fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, the sequel to his 1993 blockbuster. Jeff Goldblum returns as Dr. Ian Malcolm, who learns that a second island โ Site B, the dinosaur production facility โ contains a thriving population of free-roaming dinosaurs.
When InGen's new CEO sends a team to capture the dinosaurs and bring them to a mainland theme park, Malcolm leads a counter-expedition to document the animals and prevent their exploitation, accompanied by his girlfriend, paleontologist Sarah Harding played by Julianne Moore. The expedition goes catastrophically wrong when the capture team's activities enrage the dinosaurs, leading to a deadly game of survival. Spielberg delivered several spectacular set pieces, including the terrifying double T-Rex attack on the expedition's cliffside trailer and the velociraptors hunting through tall grass, that demonstrated his mastery of suspense and spectacle.
The film's controversial third act, in which a T-Rex escapes in San Diego and rampages through the city, divided audiences between those who found it thrillingly absurd and those who felt it undermined the film's credibility. The Lost World earned $618 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 1997 behind Titanic.
