Overview
About the Film
The Matrix Revolutions is a 2003 American science fiction action film directed by the Wachowskis, the concluding chapter of the Matrix trilogy. With the machine army drilling toward Zion for a final assault and Neo trapped in a limbo state between the Matrix and the real world, the human resistance must make a desperate last stand to survive. Simultaneously, Agent Smith has grown into an existential threat — no longer merely a program but a virus consuming everything in the Matrix, replicating endlessly until he threatens to destroy both the digital and real worlds.
Neo must confront Smith in a final battle while negotiating with the machine intelligence for peace. Revolutions was released just six months after Reloaded, and together the two sequels divided the franchise's fanbase dramatically. The Battle of Zion, featuring human-piloted mechanical suits fighting waves of sentinels in an underground dock, was the trilogy's most ambitious action set piece, inspired by military science fiction and anime.
The final rain-soaked fight between Neo and Smith, two beings of godlike power battling in the sky above the Matrix, was a visually spectacular if dramatically predetermined confrontation. The film's conclusion — in which Neo sacrifices himself to broker peace between humans and machines rather than achieving total victory — was thematically consistent with the trilogy's philosophical framework but left many audiences unsatisfied. The Matrix Revolutions earned $427 million worldwide, significantly less than Reloaded.
