Overview
About the Film
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! is a 1988 American comedy directed by David Zucker, based on the short-lived television series Police Squad! Leslie Nielsen stars as Lieutenant Frank Drebin, the most incompetent detective in the Los Angeles police department, who stumbles through an investigation to prevent the assassination of Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to a California Angels baseball game. Every scene contained multiple gags — visual puns in the background, absurd non-sequiturs delivered with deadpan sincerity, slapstick destruction that Frank remains oblivious to, and wordplay so rapid that audiences missed jokes laughing at previous ones.
Leslie Nielsen, who had been a serious dramatic actor for three decades, committed to the comedy with such stone-faced earnestness that every absurd line felt like genuine police procedure. Priscilla Presley co-starred as Jane Spencer, Frank's love interest. The Naked Gun earned $78 million worldwide on a $12 million budget and launched a trilogy.
