The Purge: Election Year is a 2016 American dystopian action horror written and directed by James DeMonaco, the third installment. Frank Grillo returns as Leo Barnes, now working as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan, played by Elizabeth Mitchell, a presidential candidate running on a platform of abolishing the Purge. When the New Founding Fathers of America revoke the immunity that previously protected government officials during Purge night specifically to target Senator Roan, Leo must protect her through a night of citywide violence while an underground resistance movement fights to keep her alive until morning.
The Purge: Election Year was released in an actual election year and its themes of political extremism, class warfare, and the weaponization of fear resonated powerfully with audiences across the political spectrum. The film earned $118 million worldwide on a $10 million budget.
