Underworld is a 2003 American action horror film directed by Len Wiseman. Kate Beckinsale stars as Selene, an elite vampire warrior known as a Death Dealer, who has spent centuries hunting Lycans β werewolves locked in an ancient blood feud with the vampires. When Selene discovers the Lycans are targeting a particular human named Michael Corvin, played by Scott Speedman, she uncovers a conspiracy that could shift the balance of power between the species and reveal hidden truths about the war's origins.
Kate Beckinsale's Selene, clad in a skin-tight black leather catsuit and wielding dual pistols with supernatural precision, became an iconic action heroine whose visual design influenced a generation of dark fantasy aesthetics. Len Wiseman created a distinctive visual world of blue-black darkness, Gothic architecture, and stylized gun battles that drew from The Matrix's leather-and-firearms aesthetic while adding a vampiric elegance. Underworld earned $95 million worldwide on a $22 million budget and launched a franchise of five films.
