Wonder Woman 1984 is a 2020 American superhero film directed by Patty Jenkins, the sequel to her 2017 hit. Gal Gadot returns as Diana Prince, now living quietly in Washington, D.C. in 1984 while secretly performing heroic deeds. When a mysterious wishing stone grants the desires of anyone who touches it β including Diana's wish to bring back her deceased love Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, and the wishes of Maxwell Lord, a failing oil magnate played by Pedro Pascal, and Barbara Minerva, a mousy gemologist who transforms into the predatory Cheetah played by Kristen Wiig β the world spirals toward nuclear catastrophe.
Wonder Woman 1984 was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during the COVID-19 pandemic, making it one of the highest-profile experiments in day-and-date streaming release. The film's reception was significantly more divided than its predecessor's, with critics noting tonal inconsistencies, a convoluted plot, and action sequences that lacked the first film's emotional impact. Pedro Pascal's sympathetic, desperate Maxwell Lord was the film's most engaging element.
The film earned $170 million worldwide, a fraction of the original's $822 million.
