Alien: Covenant is a 2017 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott, a sequel to Prometheus and prequel to the original Alien. The crew of the colonization ship Covenant, carrying 2,000 colonists in cryosleep, diverts to investigate a mysterious signal from an uncharted planet that appears perfect for habitation. They discover a devastated world where the android David, played by Michael Fassbender, has been stranded for a decade following the events of Prometheus β and has been conducting horrifying biological experiments that reveal the true origin of the xenomorph species.
Michael Fassbender delivered a dual performance as both David and Walter, the Covenant's newer, more controlled android model, and the philosophical conversations between the two artificial beings β one who has embraced creation through destruction, the other designed to serve β provided the film's most intellectually stimulating sequences. Ridley Scott balanced the cerebral themes of Prometheus with more traditional Alien horror, delivering several effectively terrifying creature sequences including the backburster and a shower attack. The film earned $240 million worldwide on a $97 million budget, a disappointment that cast doubt on the prequel series' continuation.
