The Meg is a 2018 American science fiction action film directed by Jon Turteltaub. Jason Statham stars as Jonas Taylor, a deep-sea rescue diver who must confront the ultimate aquatic predator when a research team exploring the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean accidentally releases a Megalodon โ a prehistoric shark thought extinct for millions of years that reaches over 75 feet in length. The film was a co-production between American and Chinese studios, designed to appeal to both Western and Chinese audiences, and Li Bingbing co-starred as the research station's lead oceanographer.
Jason Statham's deadpan tough-guy persona was well-suited to fighting a giant prehistoric shark, and the film's self-awareness about its absurd premise kept the tone entertaining. The Meg earned $530 million worldwide on a $130 million budget, with the Chinese box office contributing approximately $153 million โ the highest of any Warner Bros. film in China at that time.
