About the Film
American Made is a 2017 American crime drama directed by Doug Liman. Tom Cruise stars as Barry Seal, a real-life TWA pilot recruited by the CIA in the late 1970s to fly reconnaissance missions over Central America, who parlays his government connections into a wildly profitable career smuggling drugs for the Medellin Cartel, running guns for the CIA to the Nicaraguan Contras, and laundering money through a small Arkansas airport — all simultaneously, and all with various degrees of government knowledge and protection. Doug Liman brought an energetic, tongue-in-cheek tone to the material, presenting Seal's escalating criminal career as a dark comedy about American foreign policy's willingness to partner with criminals when convenient.
Tom Cruise's natural charisma was perfectly suited to Barry Seal's in-over-his-head charm. American Made earned $134 million worldwide on a $50 million budget.
