Ant-Man is a 2015 American superhero film directed by Peyton Reed and produced by Marvel Studios. The film stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, a recently released ex-convict and talented thief who is recruited by the original Ant-Man, Dr. Hank Pym played by Michael Douglas, to don a suit that allows him to shrink to the size of an insect while increasing his strength.
Together, they must plan and execute a heist to prevent Pym's former protΓ©gΓ© Darren Cross from perfecting a similar shrinking technology and selling it as a weapon to Hydra. Ant-Man had one of the most turbulent development histories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Edgar Wright β the acclaimed director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz β having developed the project for nearly a decade before departing over creative differences just weeks before filming was set to begin. Peyton Reed stepped in as a replacement, and the resulting film bore traces of both Wright's original vision and Reed's own comedic sensibility.
Paul Rudd brought his trademark everyman charm to Scott Lang, making the character a relatable, self-deprecating counterpoint to the MCU's more grandiose heroes. The film's shrinking sequences were inventive and playful, using the shift in scale for both spectacular action and visual comedy β a climactic battle fought atop a child's toy train set became one of the MCU's most creatively staged action sequences. Michael Douglas's presence lent prestige and gravitas to the production.
Ant-Man earned $519 million worldwide and proved that Marvel's formula could successfully adapt even its most seemingly absurd concepts.
