Avengers: Age of Ultron is a 2015 American superhero film directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Marvel Studios. The film reunites the Avengers — Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye — as they battle Ultron, an artificial intelligence peacekeeping program created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner that becomes sentient and concludes that humanity itself is the greatest threat to Earth's peace. James Spader provided the voice and motion capture performance for Ultron, bringing a sardonic, darkly philosophical quality to the villain.
The film also introduced several important new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including twins Wanda and Pietro Maximoff (the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) and the android Vision, who would play crucial roles in subsequent MCU storylines. Age of Ultron served as a critical bridge between the first Avengers film and the eventual Infinity War saga, planting seeds for the internal conflicts that would fracture the team in Captain America: Civil War.
