Avengers: Endgame is a 2019 American superhero film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, serving as the climactic conclusion to the first 22 films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, collectively known as the Infinity Saga. The film picks up after the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War, in which the villain Thanos used the Infinity Stones to eliminate half of all life in the universe. The surviving Avengers โ including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and Hulk โ devise a desperate plan involving time travel to undo the destruction and restore the fallen.
Endgame was the culmination of an unprecedented 11-year storytelling experiment across interconnected films, and its three-hour runtime was packed with emotional payoffs that rewarded long-term fans. The film shattered virtually every box office record upon release, earning $2.798 billion worldwide to briefly become the highest-grossing film of all time. Its opening weekend of $1.2 billion remains the largest in cinema history.
The film featured several sequences that became instant cultural moments, with audiences in theaters around the world cheering, crying, and applauding โ a collective moviegoing experience that many industry observers called the last great monoculture event before the streaming era fragmented audiences. Robert Downey Jr.'s final performance as Tony Stark provided an emotional capstone to the character who had launched the entire franchise.
