Overview
About the Film
Doctor Sleep is a 2019 American supernatural horror film directed by Mike Flanagan, based on Stephen King's 2013 sequel to The Shining. Ewan McGregor stars as the adult Danny Torrance, who has spent decades trying to suppress his psychic "shining" abilities through alcoholism and self-destruction, haunted by his traumatic childhood at the Overlook Hotel. When Danny discovers that a cult called the True Knot, led by Rose the Hat played by Rebecca Ferguson, is hunting and feeding on children with the shining to extend their own lives, he must protect a young girl named Abra, played by Kyliegh Curran, whose extraordinary powers have attracted Rose's attention — a mission that ultimately leads Danny back to the ruins of the Overlook Hotel.
Mike Flanagan achieved the near-impossible task of making a film that was simultaneously a faithful adaptation of King's novel and a respectful sequel to Stanley Kubrick's very different film, reconciling two visions that King himself had always considered incompatible. Doctor Sleep earned $72 million worldwide on a $45 million budget.
