Easy A is a 2010 American teen comedy directed by Will Gluck. Emma Stone stars as Olive Penderghast, a clean-cut high school student whose white lie about losing her virginity spirals out of control when the rumor spreads and she discovers that her suddenly scandalous reputation gives her unexpected social power. Embracing the role of school seductress by wearing corsets embroidered with a scarlet "A" โ inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, which her English class happens to be studying โ Olive agrees to fake sexual encounters with unpopular boys so they can boost their social standing, but the scheme's consequences grow increasingly uncontrollable.
Emma Stone's breakout star performance carried the film with charismatic, motor-mouthed energy, speaking directly to the camera in confession-style webcam segments that gave the comedy a personal, confessional quality. The supporting cast, including Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as Olive's impossibly cool parents and Thomas Haden Church as her sympathetic English teacher, added warmth and wit. Easy A earned $75 million worldwide on a $8 million budget.
