- David Yates originally wanted a completely different ending for the film, but test audiences preferred the one we see today.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is a 2022 fantasy film directed by David Yates, the third installment in the Wizarding World prequel series. With Grindelwald's rise to power threatening both the wizarding and Muggle worlds, Dumbledore, played by Jude Law, assembles a team including Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, his brother Theseus, and several others to counter Grindelwald's plans to be elected Supreme Head of the International Confederation of Wizards. Mads Mikkelsen replaced Johnny Depp as Grindelwald following Depp's departure from the role due to personal legal issues, and Mikkelsen brought a colder, more restrained menace to the character.
The exploration of Dumbledore and Grindelwald's past romantic relationship, acknowledged more explicitly than in previous entries, added emotional depth. The Secrets of Dumbledore earned $407 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, the franchise's lowest gross and a significant commercial disappointment.
