Hellboy is a 2004 American superhero film directed by Guillermo del Toro, based on Mike Mignola's Dark Horse Comics character. Ron Perlman stars as Hellboy, a demon summoned from Hell as an infant by Nazi occultists in 1944, rescued by Allied forces and raised by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, played by John Hurt, to become the world's greatest paranormal investigator. Working for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense alongside the amphibious psychic Abe Sapien and pyrokinetic Liz Sherman played by Selma Blair, Hellboy must stop the resurrected Rasputin from opening a portal to release the Ogdru Jahad β apocalyptic entities from beyond the stars.
Guillermo del Toro's deep affinity for monsters and outcasts made Hellboy a natural fit for his sensibilities, and Ron Perlman's performance β gruff, sarcastic, and surprisingly tender beneath layers of red prosthetic makeup β was a definitive portrayal that fans considered irreplaceable. Del Toro's creature designs, particularly the tentacled Sammael and the clockwork assassin Kroenen, demonstrated his gift for blending horror and beauty. Hellboy earned $99 million worldwide on a $66 million budget.
