Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life is a 2003 American action adventure directed by Jan de Bont. Angelina Jolie returns as the aristocratic archaeologist-adventurer who must find Pandora's Box before a Nobel Prize-winning biological weapons dealer, played by Ciaran Hinds, can use its contents to create a new weapon of mass destruction. Lara recruits her ex-lover Terry Sheridan, played by Gerard Butler, a former Royal Marine turned mercenary imprisoned for treason, to help navigate the trail from Greece to Shanghai to Kenya.
The globe-trotting action was more elaborate than the original, with underwater temple exploration, a wingsuit glide over Hong Kong harbor, and an African final act. The chemistry between Jolie and Butler's combative former lovers was the sequel's strongest dynamic. The Cradle of Life earned $156 million worldwide on a $95 million budget, insufficient for further sequels.
