About the Film
High School Musical is a 2006 American musical television film directed by Kenny Ortega, originally produced for the Disney Channel. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens star as Troy Bolton, the captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a shy, academically gifted transfer student, who discover during a karaoke session at a New Year's Eve party that they have extraordinary musical chemistry. When they audition for the school musical, their defiance of East High School's rigid social hierarchy — jocks stick with jocks, nerds stick with nerds — inspires their classmates to break free from the labels that define them.
High School Musical became one of the most significant cultural phenomena in Disney Channel history, generating $100 million in DVD sales and over $100 million in merchandise within its first year. The soundtrack was the best-selling album of 2006 in the United States.
