Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a 2008 American action adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, the fourth Indiana Jones installment arriving 19 years after The Last Crusade. Harrison Ford returns as the aging archaeologist, now in 1957 during the Cold War, who is kidnapped by Soviet agents led by Irina Spalko, played by Cate Blanchett, seeking a crystal skull connected to an ancient interdimensional civilization. Joined by greaser motorcycle rebel Mutt Williams, played by Shia LaBeouf (revealed to be Indiana's son), and reunited with Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood from Raiders, Indy races across Peru to find the lost city of Akator before the Soviets.
Crystal Skull was one of the most anticipated and subsequently divisive sequels in cinema history. The shift from supernatural to science fiction elements — the crystal skull is an alien artifact, and the film climaxes with a flying saucer — divided fans who felt the series had strayed too far from its roots. The "nuking the fridge" scene, in which Indy survives a nuclear explosion by climbing into a lead-lined refrigerator, became a cultural shorthand for franchise absurdity.
Despite the controversy, the film earned $790 million worldwide, the franchise's highest gross at that time.
