Insurgent is a 2015 American dystopian science fiction film directed by Robert Schwentke, the second installment in the Divergent franchise. Shailene Woodley returns as Tris Prior, now on the run with Four after the Erudite-led attack on Abnegation. Jeanine Matthews, played by Kate Winslet, hunts Tris to force her to open a mysterious box from Abnegation that requires a Divergent to unlock, believing it contains a message from the city's founders justifying her authoritarian rule.
Tris struggles with guilt over the deaths she caused while discovering that the box's true message will fundamentally change everything the factions believe about their society. The film incorporated more extensive visual effects than the original, including elaborate simulation sequences that tested Tris against her deepest fears and psychological vulnerabilities. Shailene Woodley's committed performance gave the action sequences emotional weight, while Kate Winslet's ice-cold Jeanine provided a formidable antagonist.
The film earned $297 million worldwide on a $110 million budget, a decline from the original that signaled the franchise's waning commercial momentum. The Divergent series would struggle further with its third installment, and plans to split the final book into two films were eventually abandoned when the penultimate entry underperformed.
