Into the Woods is a 2014 American musical fantasy directed by Rob Marshall, adapted from Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's 1987 Broadway musical. The film interweaves the stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel through an original tale about a baker and his wife, played by James Corden and Emily Blunt, who must break a witch's curse by collecting items from each fairy tale character within three nights. Meryl Streep played the Witch with characteristic theatrical commitment, and the first act โ in which the familiar fairy tales proceed toward their happy endings โ was a joyful, magnificently produced musical extravaganza.
The second act, in which the consequences of the characters' wishes create devastation and the fairy tale endings unravel, was darker and more dramatically complex. Into the Woods earned $213 million worldwide on a $50 million budget.
