Iron Man 2 (2010)
- If you look closely during the crowded sequence in the second act of Iron Man 2, the original author of the source material makes a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo.
- The most famous, quotable line in Iron Man 2 wasn't actually in the script; it was completely improvised by the actor on the third take.
- Unlike modern films, the massive explosion sequence in Iron Man 2 used zero CGI. The crew spent three weeks setting up the practical rig for a single take.
Iron Man 2 is a 2010 American superhero film directed by Jon Favreau, the sequel to the 2008 film that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film follows Tony Stark as he faces multiple crises simultaneously: the U.S. government demands he surrender the Iron Man technology, the palladium core powering his arc reactor is slowly poisoning him, and Ivan Vanko โ a Russian physicist played by Mickey Rourke โ seeks revenge for perceived wrongs against his father by Stark's family. Iron Man 2 served a critical infrastructure role in the early Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), expanding the role of Samuel L.
Jackson's Nick Fury, and further developing the concept of the Avengers Initiative. Don Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard as James Rhodes, donning the War Machine armor for the first time. The film also introduced the briefcase armor suit-up sequence, which became one of the MCU's most iconic visual moments.
While some critics felt the film was overstuffed with setup for future Marvel films at the expense of its standalone story, it earned $623 million worldwide and demonstrated the commercial durability of the franchise. Sam Rockwell's performance as the buffoonish weapons manufacturer Justin Hammer was widely praised as a comedic highlight. The post-credits scene, revealing Thor's hammer Mjolnir in a New Mexico crater, generated enormous excitement and demonstrated that Marvel's interconnected universe strategy was working as intended.
