It Follows (2015)
Where to Watch
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
- The original script for It Follows was written over a decade before production finally began in 2015.
- Before Maika Monroe was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
It Follows is a 2015 American supernatural horror film written and directed by David Robert Mitchell. Maika Monroe stars as Jay, a college student in suburban Detroit who, after a sexual encounter, discovers she has been passed a curse: a shape-shifting entity that takes the form of various people โ sometimes strangers, sometimes deceased loved ones โ and walks steadily, relentlessly toward its target. If it reaches her, it kills her and returns to the previous carrier.
The only escape is to pass the curse to another person through sex. David Robert Mitchell created one of the most original and unsettling horror concepts of the decade, turning the simple act of walking into a source of dread โ the entity never runs, never speaks, and never stops, creating a horror of inevitability rather than sudden shock. The film's retro-futuristic aesthetic, combining 1980s suburban Detroit with technology from various eras, created a dreamlike, temporally unanchored atmosphere reinforced by Disasterpeace's synthesizer score.
It Follows earned $23 million worldwide on a $2 million budget and is widely regarded as one of the defining horror films of the 2010s.
