Legally Blonde is a 2001 American comedy directed by Robert Luketic. Reese Witherspoon stars as Elle Woods, a perky, fashion-obsessed sorority president at a fictional Los Angeles university who follows her ex-boyfriend Warner, played by Matthew Davis, to Harvard Law School to prove she's serious enough for him. Initially dismissed as a blonde airhead by her classmates, professors, and even Warner's new fiancee, Elle discovers she has genuine legal talent and a unique perspective that her more conventionally academic peers lack.
Reese Witherspoon's performance transformed what could have been a shallow caricature into a genuinely inspiring character โ Elle never abandons her femininity or her interests to fit in, instead proving that intelligence and ambition come in many forms, including pink ones. The courtroom climax, in which Elle uses her knowledge of hair care to expose a murder witness's lie, was a perfectly crafted payoff. Legally Blonde earned $141 million worldwide on a $18 million budget and spawned a sequel, a musical, and a cultural legacy.
