Liar Liar (1997)

Liar Liar is a 1997 American fantasy comedy directed by Tom Shadyac. Jim Carrey stars as Fletcher Reede, a successful, pathologically dishonest attorney who will say anything to win a case, charm a woman, or avoid responsibility — including consistently breaking promises to his young son Max. When Max makes a birthday wish that his father cannot tell a lie for one full day, the wish magically comes true, forcing Fletcher to say exactly what he thinks at all times during the most important day of his professional and personal life — including a career-making court case, meetings with clients, and an encounter with his ex-wife.

Jim Carrey's physical comedy reached new heights of invention as Fletcher's body literally revolted against his attempts to lie — his face contorted, his limbs flailed, and his voice cracked as he fought and lost against the compulsion to tell the truth. The courtroom sequences, in which Fletcher's brutal honesty alternately horrified and delighted the judge, were the film's comedic peak. Liar Liar earned $302 million worldwide on a $45 million budget, making it one of Jim Carrey's highest-grossing films and one of the most successful comedies of the 1990s.
