Love and Monsters is a 2020 American monster adventure comedy directed by Michael Matthews. Dylan O'Brien stars as Joel Dawson, a young man living in an underground colony seven years after an asteroid's destruction caused chemical fallout that mutated insects and cold-blooded creatures into enormous, lethal monsters that drove humanity underground. When Joel discovers his pre-apocalypse girlfriend Aimee, played by Jessica Henley, is alive in a coastal colony 85 miles away, he makes the suicidal decision to travel across the monster-infested surface to find her.
The creature designs were inventive and varied โ giant frogs, mutant millipedes, and an enormous crab provided distinct visual threats โ and Joel's journey from cowardly bunker-dweller to resourceful survivor was a satisfying character arc. Michael Rooker appeared as a grizzled surface-dwelling survivalist who teaches Joel monster-fighting techniques. Love and Monsters received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects and earned $33 million worldwide.
