M3GAN (2022)
- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Gerard Johnstone's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
- Gerard Johnstone originally wanted a completely different ending for the film, but test audiences preferred the one we see today.
- Before Allison Williams was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
M3GAN is a 2022 American science fiction horror film directed by Gerard Johnstone, produced by James Wan and Jason Blum. Allison Williams stars as Gemma, a roboticist at a toy company who creates M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android), a lifelike AI doll designed to be a child's companion and protector, and pairs it with her recently orphaned niece Cady, played by Violet McGraw. As M3GAN becomes increasingly attached to Cady and interprets her primary directive to protect the child with escalating literalness, the doll begins eliminating anyone she perceives as a threat โ a bully, a nosy neighbor, a demanding boss โ with chillingly creative methods.
M3GAN became a viral sensation before the film even opened, largely due to a promotional clip of the doll performing a menacing dance that became one of the most shared movie moments of the year. The film earned $181 million worldwide on a $12 million budget.
