Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, who has retired from fieldwork to train new agents and is engaged to Julia, a hospital nurse played by Michelle Monaghan who knows nothing of his secret life.

When one of Ethan's trainees is captured by Owen Davian, a ruthless black market arms dealer played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan is pulled back into the field for a mission that becomes devastatingly personal when Davian kidnaps Julia. Philip Seymour Hoffman's Davian was the franchise's most terrifying villain — calm, precise, and utterly convincing in his threats, he brought a gravitas to the role that elevated every scene. J.J.

Abrams brought his television sensibility from Alias and Lost to create the franchise's most emotionally grounded entry, centering the action on Ethan's desperate attempt to protect the woman he loves.
