Ocean's Eight (2018)
Where to Watch
- Before Sandra Bullock was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
- Gary Ross originally wanted a completely different ending for the film, but test audiences preferred the one we see today.
- The original script for Ocean's Eight was written over a decade before production finally began in 2018.
Ocean's Eight is a 2018 American heist comedy directed by Gary Ross, a female-led spin-off of the Ocean's franchise. Sandra Bullock stars as Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean's estranged sister, who upon release from prison assembles a crew of seven women to steal a $150 million Cartier diamond necklace during the Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The crew includes Cate Blanchett as her partner-in-crime Lou, Anne Hathaway as a celebrity actress, Helena Bonham Carter as a fashion designer, Mindy Kaling as a jeweler, Sarah Paulson as a suburban fence, Rihanna as a hacker, and Awkwafina as a pickpocket.
Anne Hathaway's performance as the narcissistic but secretly insecure actress Daphne Kluger was the film's standout, with Hathaway playing a satirical version of her own celebrity persona with gleeful self-awareness. The Met Gala setting gave the film a glamorous visual backdrop that distinguished it from the Las Vegas-set originals. Ocean's Eight earned $297 million worldwide on a $70 million budget.
