Prometheus is a 2012 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott, serving as a thematic prequel to his 1979 classic Alien. The film follows the crew of the spacecraft Prometheus as they travel to a distant moon in 2093, following an ancient star map discovered across multiple unconnected human civilizations. Scientists Elizabeth Shaw, played by Noomi Rapace, and Charlie Holloway, played by Logan Marshall-Green, believe the map was left by "Engineers" โ an advanced alien race that may have created human life on Earth.
What they discover instead is a bioweapons facility housing a terrifying pathogen that reveals the Engineers' true intentions for humanity. Michael Fassbender's performance as the android David was the film's most celebrated element โ his portrayal of an artificial being whose curiosity about creation mirrors and mocks humanity's own quest was unsettling, ambiguous, and intellectually fascinating. Ridley Scott's return to the universe he had created 33 years earlier generated enormous anticipation, and the film's visual grandeur โ the alien landscapes, the Engineer spacecraft, the holographic star maps โ was undeniably spectacular.
However, Prometheus divided audiences sharply over its screenplay, which raised profound questions about creation, faith, and humanity's place in the universe but was criticized for character decisions that many viewers found illogical. The film earned $403 million worldwide on a $130 million budget and spawned a sequel, Alien: Covenant, in 2017.
