Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)
Where to Watch
- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Rupert Sanders's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
- Before Kristen Stewart was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
Snow White and the Huntsman is a 2012 American dark fantasy adventure directed by Rupert Sanders, a gritty reimagining of the Snow White fairy tale. Kristen Stewart stars as Snow White, imprisoned by the evil Queen Ravenna, played by Charlize Theron, who maintains her youth and beauty by consuming the life force of young women. When Snow White escapes into the Dark Forest, the Queen sends the Huntsman, played by Chris Hemsworth, to capture her, but he instead becomes her protector as she rallies an army to reclaim her kingdom.
Charlize Theron's Ravenna was the film's most compelling element โ simultaneously terrifying and sympathetic, a woman whose beauty is both her weapon and her prison, Theron brought a ferocious intensity that elevated every scene. The visual design, drawing from dark fairy tale illustrations and medieval painting, created a world of striking beauty and menace. The Dark Forest sequences, featuring twisted trees and hallucinogenic environments, were particularly impressive.
Snow White and the Huntsman earned $396 million worldwide on a $170 million budget.
