Ted 2 is a 2015 American comedy directed by Seth MacFarlane, the sequel to the 2012 hit. When Ted's marriage to Tami-Lynn results in their attempt to adopt a child, the legal system classifies Ted as property rather than a person, stripping him of all civil rights. Ted and John, along with young lawyer Samantha Jackson played by Amanda Seyfried, mount a legal challenge to establish Ted's personhood, while Donny, the obsessive collector from the first film played by Giovanni Ribisi, schemes to kidnap Ted and reverse-engineer him.
Ted 2 shifted from the original's buddy comedy formula to a civil rights courtroom comedy, drawing explicit parallels between Ted's fight for legal personhood and historical struggles for civil rights — a comparison that divided audiences between those who found the allegory clever and those who found it tone-deaf. The Comic-Con sequence, featuring Ted and John disguised in costumes while fleeing Donny through the convention floor, was a highlight. Ted 2 earned $215 million worldwide on a $68 million budget, a significant decline from the original's $549 million.
