The Adjustment Bureau is a 2011 American romantic science fiction thriller directed by George Nolfi, based on a Philip K. Dick short story. Matt Damon stars as David Norris, an ambitious New York congressman who meets Elise Sellas, a ballet dancer played by Emily Blunt, and falls deeply in love β only to discover that their relationship was never supposed to happen according to "the Plan," a predetermined outline for every human life maintained by the mysterious Adjustment Bureau, whose fedora-wearing agents physically manipulate reality to keep events on track.
When David discovers the Bureau and refuses to give up Elise, the agents escalate their interventions, and David must outrun and outmaneuver beings who can control the fabric of reality to be with the woman he loves. The central question β whether free will exists when an omnipotent organization has predetermined every human choice β gave the romantic thriller genuine philosophical weight. Matt Damon and Emily Blunt's chemistry was palpable.
The Adjustment Bureau earned $128 million worldwide on a $50 million budget.
