The Fighter is a 2010 American biographical sports drama directed by David O. Russell, based on the true story of professional boxer Micky Ward. Mark Wahlberg stars as Ward, a working-class welterweight from Lowell, Massachusetts whose promising career is being derailed by his dysfunctional family โ particularly his half-brother Dicky Eklund, played by Christian Bale, a former boxing contender turned crack addict who serves as Micky's trainer while an HBO documentary crew films his descent into addiction.
When Micky's girlfriend Charlene, played by Amy Adams, encourages him to break free from his family's toxic management and find professional trainers, the resulting conflict between loyalty and ambition provides the film's emotional core. Christian Bale's physical transformation was staggering โ he lost massive amounts of weight to portray the gaunt, twitchy, manic Dicky, and his performance earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Melissa Leo also won Best Supporting Actress as Alice Ward, the family's chain-smoking, domineering matriarch.
The Fighter earned $129 million worldwide on a $25 million budget.
