The Lovely Bones is a 2009 fantasy drama directed by Peter Jackson, based on Alice Sebold's bestselling 2002 novel. Saoirse Ronan stars as Susie Salmon, a 14-year-old girl in 1973 suburban Pennsylvania who is murdered by her neighbor George Harvey, played by Stanley Tucci, and narrates the story from her personal heaven โ a shifting, dreamlike landscape reflecting her memories, desires, and unfinished connections to the living world. From this afterlife, Susie watches her family disintegrate under the weight of grief while Harvey, a meticulous serial killer, continues to evade suspicion.
Stanley Tucci's Harvey was a masterfully understated portrayal of evil โ his quiet, precise, ordinary-looking predator was far more disturbing than any overtly monstrous villain. Saoirse Ronan brought luminous warmth to Susie's narration, and the heaven sequences were visually stunning if tonally divisive. The Lovely Bones earned $94 million worldwide on a $65 million budget.
