The Interview is a 2014 American political action comedy directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. James Franco stars as Dave Skylark, a vapid celebrity tabloid talk show host, and Seth Rogen as Aaron Rapaport, his producer, who land an interview with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. When the CIA, represented by Agent Lacey played by Lizzy Caplan, recruits them to assassinate Kim during the visit, the two bumbling Americans travel to Pyongyang where Dave is seduced by Kim's charm while Aaron discovers the reality behind the regime's propaganda.
The Interview became one of the most geopolitically significant films in Hollywood history when North Korean hackers attacked Sony Pictures' computer systems, leaking thousands of private emails and threatening terrorist attacks on theaters screening the film. Sony initially cancelled the theatrical release entirely before allowing limited screenings and simultaneous online distribution. The hack and its aftermath dominated global news and raised fundamental questions about free expression, corporate responsibility, and cybersecurity.
The Interview earned $40 million through digital sales and $11 million theatrically.
