The Lego Batman Movie is a 2017 American computer-animated superhero comedy directed by Chris McKay, a spin-off of The Lego Movie featuring Will Arnett's scene-stealing Batman. The film follows the Lego version of Batman โ an egotistical, relationship-phobic vigilante who insists he works alone and derives all his meaning from being Gotham's brooding protector โ as he inadvertently adopts an orphan named Dick Grayson, voiced by Michael Cera, and must learn to work with others to stop the Joker, voiced by Zach Galifianakis, whose evil plan is driven by Batman's refusal to acknowledge their relationship as nemeses. The Lego Batman Movie was both a loving celebration and razor-sharp parody of 78 years of Batman history, referencing every incarnation from the 1966 Adam West series to the Christopher Nolan trilogy and finding humor in the character's fundamental absurdity โ a billionaire who dresses as a bat and has no meaningful relationships.
Will Arnett's gravelly-voiced, self-aggrandizing Batman was consistently hilarious. The Lego Batman Movie earned $311 million worldwide on a $80 million budget.
