The Nun is a 2018 American gothic supernatural horror film directed by Corin Hardy, a spin-off from the Conjuring Universe exploring the origins of the demonic nun Valak that appeared in The Conjuring 2. Set in 1952 Romania, the film follows Father Burke, played by Demián Bichir, a priest specializing in investigating miracles who is sent by the Vatican to a remote abbey after a nun commits suicide. He is accompanied by Sister Irene, a novitiate played by Taissa Farmiga, whose visions suggest a connection to the abbey's dark history.
The production design of the crumbling Romanian monastery was the film's greatest asset, creating an oppressive Gothic atmosphere of shadow-filled corridors, fog-shrouded graveyards, and candlelit chambers. The Nun earned $365 million worldwide on a $22 million budget, making it the highest-grossing film in the Conjuring Universe despite receiving the franchise's weakest reviews.
