The Rock is a 1996 American action thriller directed by Michael Bay. Sean Connery stars as John Mason, a former British intelligence operative who has been illegally imprisoned for 30 years and is the only person to have ever escaped from Alcatraz. When disgruntled Brigadier General Francis Hummel, played by Ed Harris, seizes Alcatraz Island with a team of rogue Marines and threatens to launch VX nerve gas rockets at San Francisco unless the government pays reparations to the families of Marines who died in covert operations, the FBI must recruit Mason to infiltrate the prison alongside a chemical weapons specialist, played by Nicolas Cage, to disarm the missiles.
Michael Bay's direction was at its most effective โ the car chase through San Francisco's streets, the shower room gunfight, and the climactic rocket disarming were staged with visceral intensity. Ed Harris brought genuine moral complexity to Hummel, a patriot whose legitimate grievance had driven him to terrorism. The Rock earned $335 million worldwide on a $75 million budget.
