Tomb Raider is a 2018 American action adventure film directed by Roar Uthaug, based on the 2013 video game reboot. Alicia Vikander stars as Lara Croft, a young woman who has refused to accept her father's presumed death and works as a bike courier in London while ignoring her vast inheritance. When she discovers clues to her father's last expedition to a mythical Japanese island, Lara sets out to find him and becomes embroiled in a plot by the shadowy Trinity organization to obtain a supernatural artifact of devastating power.
Alicia Vikander's Lara Croft was deliberately grounded and vulnerable compared to Angelina Jolie's iconic portrayal β she gets hurt, struggles physically, and solves problems through intelligence and determination rather than superhuman ability. Vikander's extensive physical preparation was evident in realistic action sequences. The film earned $274 million worldwide on a $94 million budget.
