Wanted (2008)
Where to Watch
- During the filming of Wanted, James McAvoy improvised one of the most famous lines in the movie.
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
- Timur Bekmambetov originally wanted a completely different ending for the film, but test audiences preferred the one we see today.
Wanted is a 2008 American action thriller directed by Timur Bekmambetov, loosely based on Mark Millar's comic book series. James McAvoy stars as Wesley Gibson, a cubicle-dwelling, anxiety-medication-popping nobody in Chicago who discovers he is the son of a legendary assassin and is recruited by the Fraternity โ a thousand-year-old guild of assassins led by Sloan, played by Morgan Freeman โ and trained by Fox, played by Angelina Jolie, to avenge his father's death. Timur Bekmambetov's hyperkinetic action sequences pushed physics into the realm of pure fantasy โ assassins curve bullets around obstacles by flicking their wrists, cars flip over other cars in coordinated maneuvers, and characters heal from devastating injuries by soaking in wax baths.
The bullet-curving scenes became the film's signature visual and cultural contribution. James McAvoy's transformation from a pathetic office drone to a confident killer was entertainingly over-the-top. Wanted earned $341 million worldwide on a $75 million budget.
