- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Rawson Marshall Thurber's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
We're the Millers is a 2013 American crime comedy directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. Jason Sudeikis stars as David Clark, a small-time Denver marijuana dealer who is robbed and left in debt to his supplier Brad Gurdlinger, played by Ed Helms. To clear his debt, David must smuggle a massive shipment of marijuana from Mexico, and he devises a plan to disguise himself as a wholesome Midwestern father on a family RV road trip.
He recruits a fake family: his stripper neighbor Rose, played by Jennifer Aniston; a runaway punk teenager named Casey, played by Emma Roberts; and his naive, awkward neighbor Kenny, played by Will Poulter. The comedy derived from the tension between the wholesome family facade and the criminal reality, with the four dysfunctional strangers gradually developing genuine familial bonds despite themselves. Jennifer Aniston's committed performance as the reluctant fake wife and Will Poulter's breakout comedic turn as the earnest, painfully awkward Kenny were highlights.
The film earned $270 million worldwide on a $37 million budget, a strong commercial performance that exceeded expectations and demonstrated the ongoing audience appetite for R-rated ensemble comedies.
