- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
- The incredible score for Pain & Gain was composed in just a few weeks after the original composer dropped out.
- Before Mark Wahlberg was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
Pain & Gain is a 2013 American crime comedy directed by Michael Bay, based on the true story of the Sun Gym Gang. Mark Wahlberg stars as Daniel Lugo, a Miami bodybuilder and personal trainer whose obsessive consumption of self-help motivational philosophy convinces him he deserves a better life โ and that the fastest path to wealth is kidnapping one of his wealthy clients, played by Tony Shalhoub, and forcing him to sign over all his assets. Lugo recruits fellow bodybuilders Adrian Doorbal, played by Anthony Mackie, and Paul Doyle, played by Dwayne Johnson, a born-again Christian ex-con, for the scheme, which spirals from incompetent kidnapping through torture to murder as the three muscular, spectacularly stupid criminals leave a trail of evidence that a dogged private investigator, played by Ed Harris, follows to their doorstep.
Michael Bay brought his signature visual style to a true crime story that was so absurd it required on-screen text reminding audiences "this is still a true story." Pain & Gain earned $86 million worldwide on a $26 million budget.
