Black Adam is a 2022 American superhero film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, starring Dwayne Johnson as the title character, an antihero from the DC Comics universe. In the fictional Middle Eastern nation of Kahndaq, the ancient champion Teth-Adam is freed from 5,000 years of imprisonment and unleashes his immense, destructive powers against the oppressive forces controlling his homeland. The Justice Society of America — including Hawkman played by Aldis Hodge, Doctor Fate played by Pierce Brosnan, Atom Smasher played by Noah Centineo, and Cyclone played by Quintessa Swindell — is dispatched to contain Adam, who refuses to play by superhero rules.
Dwayne Johnson had championed the Black Adam character for over a decade, and his physical presence was well-suited to the role's imposing power. Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate provided the film's most emotionally resonant subplot. Black Adam earned $393 million worldwide on a $195 million budget, a commercial disappointment.
