Gemini Man (2019)
- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Ang Lee's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
- Ang Lee originally wanted a completely different ending for the film, but test audiences preferred the one we see today.
Gemini Man is a 2019 American science fiction action thriller directed by Ang Lee. Will Smith stars as Henry Brogan, an elite assassin nearing retirement who discovers he is being hunted by a younger, faster version of himself โ a clone created from his DNA 25 years ago and raised as the perfect soldier by Henry's former commanding officer, played by Clive Owen. The film's primary technical innovation was the creation of a fully digital young Will Smith, rendered through a combination of performance capture from Smith himself and cutting-edge visual effects that attempted to recreate the actor as he appeared in his late twenties.
Ang Lee shot the film at 120 frames per second in 3D โ five times the standard frame rate โ creating an hyper-real image clarity that was both technically impressive and divisive among audiences accustomed to traditional cinema's visual language. Gemini Man earned $173 million worldwide on a $138 million budget, a commercial loss.
