Greenland is a 2020 American disaster thriller directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Gerard Butler stars as John Garrity, a structural engineer in Atlanta whose family is selected for emergency shelter in government bunkers in Greenland as a massive comet fragment is hours away from striking Earth and causing an extinction-level event. The Garrity family โ John, his estranged wife Allison played by Morena Baccarin, and their diabetic young son Nathan โ must navigate increasingly desperate and dangerous conditions as society collapses around them, with ordinary people turning violent as they realize they haven't been selected for survival.
Greenland distinguished itself from typical disaster films by focusing on the human-scale panic, moral dilemmas, and social breakdown that would actually accompany such an event rather than spectacle. Gerard Butler's performance was more grounded and emotionally invested than his typical action fare. Greenland earned $52 million worldwide during limited pandemic theatrical release but became a major streaming success.
