Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a 2018 American science fiction action film directed by J.A. Bayona, the sequel to Jurassic World. Three years after the Indominus Rex incident, the dinosaurs of Isla Nublar face extinction when the island's dormant volcano becomes active.
Claire Dearing, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, and Owen Grady, played by Chris Pratt, return to the island on an apparent rescue mission organized by Benjamin Lockwood, the former partner of Jurassic Park creator John Hammond. However, the rescue is revealed as a cover for a scheme to capture and auction the dinosaurs as weapons to the highest bidder, culminating in a gothic horror-inflected third act set in Lockwood's massive estate. Bayona, previously known for the horror film The Orphanage and the tsunami drama The Impossible, brought a darker, more intimate sensibility to the franchise โ the Lockwood Manor sequences, featuring a genetically engineered Indoraptor stalking through shadowy corridors, were genuinely terrifying and marked a departure from the franchise's typically open-air action spectacle. The film's most controversial moment was its conclusion, in which the surviving dinosaurs are released into the wider world, fundamentally changing the franchise's premise and raising ethical questions about coexistence between humans and de-extinct species. Jeff Goldblum reprised his role as Dr.
Ian Malcolm for bookend congressional hearing scenes. Fallen Kingdom earned $1.31 billion worldwide, the 12th highest-grossing film of all time at release.
