Hereditary (2018)
Where to Watch
- Despite a very rocky opening weekend, Hereditary went on to gross over 5x its initial budget thanks purely to incredible audience word-of-mouth.
- The lead role in Hereditary was originally offered to a massive A-list star who turned it down because they didn't understand the script.
Hereditary is a 2018 American psychological horror film written and directed by Ari Aster in his feature debut. Toni Collette stars as Annie Graham, a miniature artist whose mother's death triggers a chain of increasingly disturbing events that reveal her family's dark, inherited connection to a demonic entity. As Annie's grief drives her to extremes β attending support groups, attempting sΓ©ances, discovering her mother's hidden life β the horror escalates from psychological unease to supernatural terror, culminating in one of the most disturbing final sequences in modern horror.
Toni Collette's performance was widely considered the finest in any horror film in decades β her portrayal of a mother consumed by grief, guilt, and eventual madness featured scenes of such raw emotional intensity that her non-nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress was called the year's most egregious snub. Ari Aster's direction built dread through meticulous composition, slow pacing, and the withholding of information, creating a constant sense that something terrible was present in every frame even when nothing overtly horrifying was visible. The car scene β which arrives without warning and fundamentally changes the film's trajectory β was one of the most shocking moments in modern cinema.
Hereditary earned $79 million worldwide on a $10 million budget.
