Toni Collette's performance was widely considered the finest in any horror film in decades β her portrayal of a mother consumed by grief, guilt, and eventual madness featured scenes of such raw emotional intensity that her non-nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress was called the year's most egregious snub. Ari Aster's direction built dread through meticulous composition, slow pacing, and the withholding of information, creating a constant sense that something terrible was present in every frame even when nothing overtly horrifying was visible.
